A kind dog, Nuka has always been. The black German shepherd has always enjoyed animals of all sizes because he was raised in a home filled with small creatures, some of which had fur, while others had feathers or scales. Nuka’s mother, Nicole Yates, states “Our vet said when he was younger that he was wise beyond his years … because he’s generally so placid and relaxed.”

Due to the COVID-19 lockdown, a nearby pet store was searching for emergency homes for its animals in April, and Nuka welcomed a new member into his busy household. Blue, the gray and white rat, was obviously in need of consoling, and Nuka was more than delighted to provide it.

Yate further explains, “There was this immediate clear connection between Blue and Nuka compared with my other rats,” Yates said. “It was more so Blue who seemed to adore Nuka! He loved snuggling into Nuka’s fur and if I put him down on the floor he would run to find Nuka.”

Nuka’s mother taught him to lie down whenever she enters the room with a tiny animal when he was a puppy. Yates then allows him to play gently with his younger brothers once he has calmed down. They aren’t afraid of their older brother regardless of his stature.

Blue’s new circumstance is perfect in every way. The little rat seems to have the ideal nest thanks to Nuka’s thick hair. And if Nuka notices that Blue is dozing, he won’t move out of concern that he’ll wake up his friend.

Yate goes on to say, “Blue is a very placid rat so he’s really happy just being with Nuka and laying there with him, either snuggled into his mane or at his belly,” following that with, “Nuka likes to bathe Blue with licks, which Blue doesn’t seem to mind either.”

When Blue is awake, he even uses his friendly dog as a jungle gym as he feels so at ease around him. Nuka doesn’t appear to care at all and is simply pleased that his companion is content.

We hope this animated bond between little Blue and gentle-natured Nuka continues to blossom as time goes by!

There’s Nuka! Surrounded by an abundance of little companions! It’s a scene plucked straight out of a children’s storybook.
