The beautiful mandarin duck was introduced from the Far East, where it is still believed to be found in the Asian continent in countries like China, Japan, Korea, and a few areas in Russia. Furthermore, the mandarin duck had escaped or was deliberately released, from captivity in the UK.

Mandarin ducks are occasionally quite shy birds, who hide beneath overhanging willows and usually form small flocks. It is indeed a beautiful, unmistakable duck with wonderful plumage and contrast.

Male mandarin ducks have precise plumage with orange plumes on their cheeks, orange ‘sails’ on their back, and pale orange sides whilst females are quite the opposite in comparison, with grey heads, brown backs, and white eyes stripes.

Most male ducks, consist of vibrant colors whilst the females are known to be a bit staler with a white stripe going across their eyes. They usually breed in high areas and valleys as long as there is fresh water around them.

Although these ducks are famous for the loss of their habitat, they do not belong to the category of endangered species. Even though they were introduced from China, they are now found on park lakes and other wetlands with overhanging trees, mainly in South East England, North England, Wales, and Scotland.
